A Brief History of Boylan Heights

Boylan Heights is one of the first planned neighborhoods in Raleigh. When economic expansion was occurring in the early 1900’s, real estate developers started purchasing land around the immediate downtown proper. One of these plots of land was the Boylan estate. The property had been owned by William Montfort Boylan and in 1907; his heirs sold the 100 acre wooded land. This middle class neighborhood was popular because they boasted wooded lots and attractive designs and by 1915 all the lots were sold.

Location

Boylan Heights is located just southwest of downtown, while being bordered to the south by Western Blvd. It is also boarded by the well-known streets of Martin St., Florence St. & Dorothea Dr. It’s within walking distance to the downtown Amphitheatre, convention center & many restaurants.

Activities

While Boylan Heights is walkable to downtown Raleigh, there are many events within the community itself. Every year, the community holds the free Boylan Heights ArtWalk. This is a well known event where over 100 artists and craftspeople sell a wide range of jewelry, wood/metal work, art, photography, paintings and many other items right from their porches and yards! Neighbors also come together for their Big Boylan Bash, which is a chance for neighbors to get together on a Sunday afternoon in August to hear live music, socialize and eat with proceeds going to the Boylan Heights Association. In addition to these two large events, there is a host of other events throughout the year.
